Ranking scope: This is not a collection-completion ranking. It is a run-decision tier list for reaching Ante 8 and clearing higher stakes. A Joker moves up when it creates immediate safety, scales without demanding perfect shops, or copies an effect that is already carrying the run. It moves down when it needs several missing pieces before it beats a reliable scoring or economy slot.

The best Joker in Balatro is not always the card with the largest theoretical multiplier. The strongest pickup is usually the one that solves the next blind while leaving room for the run to scale. This Balatro Joker tier list therefore ranks practical value: how quickly a Joker works, how reliably it grows, how much economy or deck shaping it needs, and whether its effect remains useful after the early antes. Editions are treated as bonuses rather than part of the base ranking, and legendary Jokers are noted separately because rarity makes them poor planning assumptions.

Quick Balatro Joker Tier List

For a normal unseeded run, S tier belongs to Jokers that can define a winning engine or multiply a proven one. Blueprint and Brainstorm are the clearest examples because copying your best compatible effect is usually stronger than adding another average effect. Cavendish and Card Sharp offer simple multiplicative scoring with relatively little setup. Hanging Chad becomes elite when the first scored card carries a strong enhancement, seal or Photograph trigger, while Baron and Mime become elite only after the deck contains enough Kings, Steel cards and retrigger support.

A tier contains powerful but more conditional engines. Hologram and Constellation scale from actions a good run may already want to take. Throwback, Driver's License, Blackboard and Campfire can provide serious xMult, but each asks for a route: skip history, enhanced cards, hand management or repeat shop spending. Strong economy Jokers can also deserve an A-tier purchase early because money converts into packs, rerolls and the missing scoring piece.

B tier is not a rejection pile. Abstract Joker, Green Joker, Ride the Bus, Supernova, Fortune Teller, Square Joker and other straightforward scalers can carry Ante 8 when found at the correct time. They rank below the top bands because their ceiling, reset risk or required repetition makes them less flexible. C and D tiers are mostly narrow payoffs, temporary bridges or cards whose slot cost is difficult to justify without a specific deck state.

How We Rank the Best Jokers in Balatro

The ranking uses five questions. Does the Joker improve the next blind immediately? Does it scale into later antes? Does it need a second rare card before it works? Does it consume money, discards or deck quality that the run cannot spare? Finally, can its value be measured and positioned correctly? A modest +Mult Joker can be better than a dormant xMult card when the next boss blind is already dangerous.

Stake and deck choice change the answer. On Gold Stake, rental and perishable stickers make expensive long-term plans less stable. Plasma Deck changes the relative value of Chips and Mult. Checkered Deck makes suit-dependent effects easier to support. Abandoned Deck removes face-card routes, which sharply lowers Baron, Photograph and several rank-specific plans. A tier list should narrow decisions, not replace reading the current deck.

Timing matters as much as raw strength. An economy Joker bought in Ante 1 can fund the scoring engine that wins Ante 8. The same card bought immediately before a lethal blind may do nothing. Likewise, a scalable Joker found late is only good if the run can still feed it. Always compare the candidate with the weakest occupied slot and with the score required by the next blind.

Use a two-step test

First ask whether the Joker keeps the run alive now. Then ask whether it still contributes after two more antes. A card that passes both tests is usually a better purchase than a flashy effect with no active support.

S-Tier Jokers: Copy, Reliable xMult and Premium Retriggers

Blueprint and Brainstorm sit near the top because they scale with the best compatible Joker you already own. They can copy economy during the shop phase, a discard or held-in-hand effect before scoring, and a scoring engine when the hand is played. Their limitation is compatibility and position: copying the wrong card or leaving the copy beside an inactive effect wastes the slot. Use the Joker Order Guide and calculator when several +Mult, xMult and retrigger effects compete for the copy.

Cavendish is valuable because x3 Mult is simple, immediate and broadly compatible. Its destruction chance exists, but the expected value is still excellent for an Ante 8 route. Card Sharp is similarly direct after the first repeat of a poker hand, so it shines when the deck can play the same reliable hand more than once. Both cards rank highly because they do not ask you to rebuild the entire deck before producing multiplicative score.

Hanging Chad is S tier only when the first scored card matters. Photograph, glass cards, Lucky cards, bonus enhancements and seals can turn its two extra retriggers into a major engine. Without a premium first card, Chad is closer to a flexible combo piece than a standalone carry. Baron and Mime follow the same rule at a larger scale: they can reach enormous scores, but only when the hand holds enough Kings, Steel cards and relevant seals.

  • Best universal copy cards: Blueprint and Brainstorm, provided the target effect is compatible and positioned correctly.
  • Best low-setup xMult: Cavendish and Card Sharp when the run can repeatedly play its main hand.
  • Best retrigger package: Hanging Chad plus a premium first scored card; Photograph is the familiar entry point, not the only payoff.
  • Best high-score shell: Baron and Mime with Kings, Steel cards and held-card retriggers; powerful but not a default Ante 8 plan.

A-Tier Jokers: Scalers That Need a Clear Route

Hologram and Constellation reward actions that can improve the rest of the run. Hologram grows as playing cards are added, which pairs naturally with selected Standard Packs and card-creation effects, but careless additions can damage draw consistency. Constellation grows through Planet purchases, making it excellent when the main poker hand is already chosen and the shop economy can support repeated upgrades.

Driver's License is a strong xMult payoff after the deck reaches its enhanced-card threshold. The card is weak before that threshold, so count the deck instead of buying on hope. Blackboard can supply strong xMult when the cards left in hand satisfy its suit condition, but discards and hand selection must preserve that state. Throwback can be excellent in a run that already skipped blinds; forcing bad skips merely to feed it can cost more than the multiplier returns.

Campfire has a high ceiling during an ante because selling cards increases its multiplier, then the value resets after the boss blind. It works best with money, consumable generation and a reason to cycle shop items. It is much weaker when the economy cannot afford repeated purchases. These Jokers are A tier because their payoff can match S tier, while their setup cost makes the average pickup less automatic.

Build-Dependent Jokers That Move Between Tiers

Many disagreements in a Joker tier list come from pretending the cards are evaluated in an empty deck. Photograph is ordinary without face cards and retriggers, then becomes a defining multiplier with Hanging Chad. Bloodstone is inconsistent in a mixed deck but threatening after Hearts conversion and retriggers. The Idol can be nearly blank before deck fixing and extraordinary after the deck is reduced to a small set of ranks and suits.

Burnt Joker and Space Joker are also route cards. Hand-level growth is valuable when one poker hand is played repeatedly, yet either card can be too slow when found late. Stuntman provides a large Chip injection at the cost of hand size; that drawback is manageable in some high-card builds and harmful in draw-dependent Straight or Flush routes. Splash can rescue enhancement-based scoring, but it rarely deserves a permanent slot after the deck has a more focused engine.

Economy cards should be judged by time remaining. Mail-In Rebate, Business Card, Reserved Parking, Rocket and other income engines may be stronger than a B-tier scoring Joker early because they buy future power. Near the final boss, unspent earning potential is not score. Sell or replace an economy slot once its remaining return is lower than the immediate scoring gain needed to survive.

Context changes the tier

Move a Joker up when the deck already pays its condition. Move it down when you would need several shops, Tarot cards or another rare Joker before the effect becomes active.

How to Use the Tier List in a Shop

Start by identifying the current engine: base Chips, flat +Mult, multiplicative xMult, retriggers, or a held-card package. Then identify the weakest slot. Replacing the weakest slot is safer than buying a famous S-tier card that does not interact with the current hand. If the run has no stable +Mult, an xMult copy may multiply a number that is still too small. If the run already has score but no money, one early economy slot may create more future power than another redundant scorer.

Before selling, compare the next blind target with at least two arrangements. Joker order matters because +Mult usually wants to resolve before xMult, and copy effects need the correct neighbor or leftmost target. Retrigger packages also depend on card order inside the played hand and cards held in hand. The Joker Calculator is useful when a purchase changes the scoring chain but the result is not obvious from the card text.

Leave room for temporary decisions. A B-tier bridge Joker can be correct for one blind, then sold when the permanent engine appears. Conversely, holding an inactive A-tier scaler through two dangerous shops can end the run before it becomes good. Tier labels describe expected value; the blind target, available cash, stickers and current deck decide the actual purchase.

  • Buy now: The Joker immediately fixes a Chips, +Mult, xMult, consistency or economy gap.
  • Buy for scaling: The run can activate the condition with actions it already wants to take.
  • Skip: The card needs several missing pieces, breaks draw consistency or duplicates a stronger occupied role.
  • Recalculate: A copy, retrigger, Plasma balance or Joker-order change makes intuition unreliable.

Patch Scope: Current 1.0.1f Balance and the Announced 1.1 Update

This guide is scoped to Balatro's current public 1.0.1f balance as checked on July 29, 2026. The official Steam announcement described 1.0.1f as the final gameplay balance patch before the larger 1.1 update. LocalThunk later confirmed that version 1.1 was still in development and would not release in 2025; no newer public balance release was verified during this update.

A future balance patch can move specific Jokers, especially cards whose trigger count, scaling rate, compatibility or economy has changed before. The ranking method should remain useful even when a few names move: prioritize immediate blind safety, scalable output, affordable setup and synergy with the deck that actually exists. We will revise the table when an official public balance update changes those inputs.

Balatro Joker Tier List FAQ

Blueprint is the strongest general answer because it copies the best compatible effect in the current build, but it is not automatically useful without a good target. Brainstorm has similar upside with a leftmost-position constraint. For low-setup scoring, Cavendish and Card Sharp are easier immediate answers.

Hanging Chad is S tier in a build where the first scored card has a premium trigger such as Photograph, Glass, Lucky or a useful seal. Without a strong first-card effect, it is a flexible retrigger piece rather than a complete scoring engine.

No. Perkeo, Triboulet, Canio and Yorick can define winning runs, while Chicot solves boss-blind problems. Their rarity makes them poor route assumptions, and each still depends on the deck and remaining antes. Evaluate the legendary you receive instead of reserving a slot for one you may never see.

It can change the practical value of a card. +Mult, xMult, copy effects and retriggers resolve in an order, so a strong Joker can underperform when placed incorrectly. The underlying tier stays similar, but the current arrangement determines whether you receive the expected score.

The main ranking favors Ante 8 and higher-stake consistency. Baron, Mime, Perkeo and specialized retrigger engines have a much higher ceiling in endless high-score play, so they can move above simple consistency cards when the goal changes.
