Balatro Planet Cards: All 12 Cards, Effects and Best Uses
A practical reference for every Planet card, the poker hand it levels, the bonus it adds, and the shop decisions that keep a run consistent.
Balatro Planet Cards level a specific poker hand for the current run. They are consumables, but they do not behave like a one-turn scoring effect: a Planet purchase permanently raises the matching hand's Chips and Mult until that run ends. That makes a Planet card a long-term route decision, not merely another item to clear from a consumable slot.
Quick Answer: What Do Planet Cards Do in Balatro?
Each Planet card is tied to one poker hand. Mercury levels Pair, Venus levels Three of a Kind, Earth levels Full House, Mars levels Four of a Kind, Jupiter levels Flush, Saturn levels Straight, Uranus levels Two Pair, Neptune levels Straight Flush and Pluto levels High Card. The three secret hands use Planet X for Five of a Kind, Ceres for Flush House and Eris for Flush Five.
Using a Planet card raises the selected hand's level and adds the Chips and Mult shown in the table below. The bonus is only useful when the run can form that hand often enough to score it. A levelled Pair or Straight can be a better investment than a high-base hand that the deck almost never assembles.
If you are unsure, compare the next Planet purchase against the current deck shape, Joker text, hand size and upcoming blind. The right question is not which Planet has the biggest printed bonus; it is which hand will still be played several rounds from now.
Fast rule
Spend Planet cards on the hand that is reliable, supported by your Jokers and already close to the level needed for the next blind.
All 12 Balatro Planet Cards and Their Effects
The table lists the standard Planet cards and the matching hand they level. The bonus is the increase from one use, so repeated copies continue to improve the same hand. The exact shop offer still depends on the run, pack contents, vouchers, Telescope or other effects; the table is a reference for the card's role, not a promise that a specific Planet will appear next.
The first nine cards cover the ordinary poker hands. Planet X, Ceres and Eris are tied to Balatro's hidden hands and need separate planning. Royal Flush does not have its own Planet card: it is recognized as a Straight Flush pattern and uses the Straight Flush Planet family.
| Planet Card | Levels | Bonus per use | Typical role | Search note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | Pair | +15 Chips, +1 Mult | Reliable low-card route | Most useful when Pair is the main hand |
| Venus | Three of a Kind | +20 Chips, +2 Mult | Rank-focused scaling | Needs duplicate ranks and draw support |
| Earth | Full House | +25 Chips, +2 Mult | Five-card rank route | Good when two ranks are already concentrated |
| Mars | Four of a Kind | +30 Chips, +3 Mult | Heavy rank scaling | Strong after duplication or deck fixing |
| Jupiter | Flush | +15 Chips, +2 Mult | Suit-focused route | Pairs well with suit conversion and Wild Cards |
| Saturn | Straight | +30 Chips, +3 Mult | Rank-sequence scaling | Powerful but sensitive to missing ranks |
| Uranus | Two Pair | +20 Chips, +1 Mult | Flexible midgame hand | Useful when Pair is easy but Three of a Kind is not |
| Neptune | Straight Flush | +40 Chips, +4 Mult | High-value specialist route | Needs both suit and rank consistency |
| Pluto | High Card | +10 Chips, +1 Mult | Single-card or held-card route | Excellent when Jokers reward small hands |
| Planet X | Five of a Kind | +35 Chips, +3 Mult | Hidden rank-duplication route | Appears after the hidden hand is revealed |
| Ceres | Flush House | +40 Chips, +4 Mult | Hidden rank-plus-suit route | Requires a Full House in one suit |
| Eris | Flush Five | +50 Chips, +3 Mult | Hidden maximum-pattern route | Requires five cards of one rank and suit |
How Planet Cards Change Hand Levels and Scoring
Planet cards add to the hand's level, and the game then uses the updated base Chips and Mult when that hand is scored. Card Chips, enhancements, seals, editions, Jokers and retriggers are separate parts of the calculation. This is why a Planet purchase can look modest in isolation but become much larger after the hand is played through a strong scoring engine.
The useful comparison is marginal score over expected plays. If Pair is level 8 and you play it every blind, one more Mercury can affect many hands. If Straight Flush is level 1 but you have no suit density, no rank control and no draw support, Neptune is mostly a future plan rather than immediate safety.
Black Hole is the important exception to single-hand specialization: it levels every poker hand. It can rescue a split build or make a new route viable, but it does not remove the need to decide which hand is easiest to repeat. Telescope and Observatory can also change how often the shop or consumable pool presents the Planet support you want.
- Chips and Mult: Planet bonuses change the hand's base values before card and Joker effects resolve.
- Run duration: The level increase lasts for the current run; it is not a permanent account unlock.
- Expected value: A smaller bonus used every round can beat a larger bonus used once.
- Hand recognition: The game levels the hand it recognizes, so check whether a higher pattern changes the intended route.
How to Get Planet Cards in Balatro
The most familiar source is a Celestial Pack. Planet cards can also appear in shops and through effects that manipulate consumables or the shop pool. The important distinction is between seeing a Planet card and being able to buy it without endangering the next blind: a good hand-level purchase is still bad if it leaves you unable to clear the immediate target.
If the run is committed to one hand, Telescope can improve the consistency of finding the Planet for the hand you play most. Observatory can make a Planet-linked route more valuable when the related hand is already a reliable engine. These effects are strongest after the deck has chosen a hand, not before the route exists.
Secret-hand Planets are different. The corresponding hand generally needs to be successfully played in the current run before its Planet can enter the available pool. Unlocking the hand in a collection or seeing it in a guide does not mean the card will automatically be offered in every future shop.
| Source or effect | What it helps with | Decision check |
|---|---|---|
| Celestial Pack | Offers Planet cards or a Planet-related consumable choice | Can the purchase level the next blind-safe hand? |
| Shop offer | Direct access when the right card appears | Keep enough money for Joker, reroll and blind safety first |
| Telescope | More reliable access to a Planet for the played hand | Is one main hand already established? |
| Observatory | Extra value from a Planet-focused route | Does the deck repeat the linked hand rather than merely own the voucher? |
| Black Hole | Levels every poker hand at once | Use it to widen or rescue a route, not to avoid all specialization |
Secret Planet Cards: Planet X, Ceres and Eris
The three hidden Planet cards correspond to Five of a Kind, Flush House and Flush Five. They are attractive because the hands have large base values, but their setup cost is also high. You need rank duplication, suit control or both, and the run must first demonstrate the hand before the associated Planet can become a realistic consumable target.
Planet X is the most natural hidden card for a deck that is already copying one rank. Ceres asks for a Full House with one suit, so rank concentration alone is not enough. Eris is the most demanding: five cards must share both rank and suit, and a single missing piece can turn the plan into an expensive detour.
Treat these cards as route confirmation rather than an invitation to force a perfect hand. If the deck is one conversion away and the next shops are safe, the hidden Planet can finish a powerful line. If the deck is still searching for its first duplicate, a reliable Mercury, Jupiter or Pluto may be the correct survival purchase.
Hidden-card rule
Reveal the hand first, then decide whether the secret Planet is helping an existing route or merely tempting you into a new one.
How to Choose the Best Planet Card for a Run
Start with the hand you actually play, not the Planet card with the largest number. Count your remaining deck, hand size, discard pattern, suit density, duplicated ranks and the Jokers that trigger from scoring cards or held cards. A High Card route can make Pluto valuable when Baron-style held-card effects are doing the work; a Flush route makes Jupiter attractive only when the suit is stable.
Next compare the next blind, not just the final score. A Planet card that adds enough base Chips to clear a close target can be worth more than a future scaling card. If the shop has a Joker that fixes consistency, buy the fix first. Planet cards amplify a route; they rarely create a route from nothing.
Finally, use a second opinion. Test the likely hand and level in the Build Calculator, then use the Odds Calculator when the decision depends on drawing one rank, suit or gap. If Joker order is the uncertainty, check the Joker Order Guide before spending the last dollars on a Planet.

Common Planet Card Mistakes
The most common error is buying a Planet because the card is rare or the number is large. A level for a hand you never play is not value. The second error is treating Celestial Packs as mandatory purchases even when the run needs money, a Joker or a reroll to survive the next blind.
Re-check the plan after a deck conversion, hand-size penalty, Boss Blind, major Joker purchase or Black Hole. Planet decisions are part of the run's route, so the best card can change even when the card names stay the same.
- Ignoring consistency: A large hand bonus cannot compensate for a hand that rarely appears.
- Forcing secret hands: Planet X, Ceres and Eris are finishers for supported routes, not automatic pivots.
- Spending the survival budget: Keep enough money for the next blind, a needed Joker or a targeted reroll.
- Forgetting hand recognition: The game may score a higher qualifying hand than the one you intended to level.
- Overlooking the calculator: A quick score or odds check can reveal whether one more level changes the blind outcome.
Summary: Planet Cards Are Route Decisions
Balatro Planet Cards are permanent run upgrades for individual poker hands. Mercury through Pluto support the ordinary hands, while Planet X, Ceres and Eris support the three hidden hands. The matching hand, current level, deck shape and Joker plan matter more than the name of the card.
Use the table as a reference, then make the practical choice: level the hand you can repeat, verify the next blind, and keep enough resources to finish the route. When the answer is close, compare the build in the calculator and use draw odds to decide whether the Planet is a real upgrade or just an attractive detour.
