Player-built notes for Balatro scoring and run routing

Practical rule: A tag is only good when its reward arrives before your run needs it. The right question is not which tag looks strongest in isolation, but whether the skipped blind costs less than the pack, voucher, Joker, money or hand upgrade that the tag creates.

Balatro tags are rewards offered when you skip a Small Blind or Big Blind instead of playing it. They can add a pack to the next shop, create a special Joker, improve a poker hand, change a Boss Blind, or pay you later. The reward is visible, but the cost is easy to miss: skipping also removes a chance to earn chips, money, interest, a shop, a Planet card and a safe hand-leveling round. This Balatro tags guide lists the tag families, explains what each one is trying to do, and gives a repeatable way to decide whether the reward is better than taking the blind.

What Balatro tags do

A tag is a delayed or immediate reward attached to a blind skip. Balatro tags can pay now, while others change the next shop or Boss Blind. Read four things before taking it: the resource created, the timing, what could stop you using it, and what the skipped blind would have paid.

Value the timing, not only the icon

A tag wins when its reward arrives at the point your build can convert it into score, economy or flexibility.

Complete Balatro tags list

There are 24 tags in the standard game. They can resolve immediately or wait for the next shop, Boss Blind or another condition, and they resolve in the order collected. Use the table as a reference; the first response column is the opportunity-cost check.

Tag Reward or change First check before skipping
Uncommon Tag Adds a free Uncommon Joker to the next shop. Have a Joker slot and a plan for replacing a weak role.
Rare Tag Adds a free Rare Joker to the next shop. Keep room for a high-impact Joker and enough time to use it.
Negative Tag The next base-edition Joker in a shop is free and becomes Negative. Check the next shop timing and whether the extra Joker can help.
Foil Tag The next base-edition Joker in a shop is free and becomes Foil. Prefer it when chips are the current scoring gap.
Holographic Tag The next base-edition Joker in a shop is free and becomes Holographic. Take it when Mult is behind and a shop arrives soon.
Polychrome Tag The next base-edition Joker in a shop is free and becomes Polychrome. Check that the Joker's ability fits the build before valuing the edition.
Investment Tag Pays a large cash reward after the next Boss Blind. Make sure the next Boss is reachable without the skipped blind.
Voucher Tag Adds a free Voucher to the next shop. Check whether the next shop and current economy can use it.
Boss Tag Rerolls the next Boss Blind. Use it when the visible Boss directly removes your only line.
Standard Tag Gives a free Mega Standard Pack. Take it when deck size, seals or card selection are urgent.
Charm Tag Gives a free Mega Arcana Pack. Look for suit conversion, money or a useful consumable.
Meteor Tag Gives a free Mega Celestial Pack. Use it when the deck can repeat one hand and wants levels.
Buffoon Tag Gives a free Mega Buffoon Pack. Prioritize it when the Joker engine has an obvious missing role.
Handy Tag Gives $1 for each hand played this run. Value hands already played; the skip itself does not create them.
Garbage Tag Gives $1 for each unused discard this run. Value discards already left unused; the skip itself does not create them.
Ethereal Tag Gives a free Spectral Pack. Reserve consumable space and weigh the high-variance choice.
Coupon Tag The initial cards and Booster Packs in the next shop are free. Skip only if the next shop has options you can use.
Double Tag Creates a copy of the next selected tag; it cannot copy another Double Tag. Save it for a tag whose reward is worth repeating.
Juggle Tag Adds 3 hand size for the next round. Use it when the build needs more outs, not only more score.
D6 Tag Rerolls in the next shop start at $0. Keep enough money to buy the improved shop.
Top-up Tag Creates up to 2 Common Jokers if there is room. Leave Joker slots open and know which role is missing.
Speed Tag Gives $5 for every blind skipped this run. Count the skip history and compare the payout with the blind.
Orbital Tag Lets you choose a poker hand to upgrade by 3 levels. Take it when a repeatable hand can convert levels into score.
Economy Tag Doubles your money, up to a maximum of $40. Check the cap and protect the next interest threshold.

Pack and Joker tags

Pack tags are easiest to overvalue because they promise a visible object. Balatro tags should be compared with the likely usable pack or Joker, the blind's guaranteed score, money and shop access. Keep a slot, a purpose and enough stability to use the result.

  • Joker slot: Keep room for the result.
  • Scoring gap: Match chips, Mult or XMult.
  • Pack timing: Fix the next Boss if possible.
  • Variance budget: Do not gamble a lethal run.

Money, shop and route tags

Money tags often decide whether a run reaches Ante 8. Balatro tags such as Handy and Garbage count hands played and unused discards during the run; Investment pays $25 after a Boss, and Economy doubles current money up to $40. Voucher, Coupon and D6 tags matter only when the next shop has a plan you can use.

A delayed tag needs a reachable future

Count the shops, Bosses and interest thresholds between the skip and the reward. If the run cannot reach that point safely, the tag is not real value yet.

When to skip a blind for a tag

Skip when the tag solves a current bottleneck and the blind would add little you need. Balatro tags are strongest when the reward arrives on time. Do not skip when the blind is your only reliable money source, the reward arrives too late, or the next shop cannot use it. Double Tag, Investment Tag, Juggle Tag and Orbital Tag all need their timing condition checked.

  • Take the tag: It fixes a known gap.
  • Play the blind: It gives safer guaranteed value.
  • Delay the decision: Save Double Tag for later.
  • Avoid the trap: Your slots or money cannot use it.

A tag decision workflow

Start with the next blind, then name the missing resource: chips, Mult, money, hand size, a second hand, a suit fix, a Joker slot or a reroll. For Balatro tags, estimate the blind's money, interest and hand-level value, then use the calculator with the real Chips, Mult, hand level, Enhancements, seals and Joker order.

Question If yes If no
Does the tag fix the current bottleneck? Count its usable reward. Treat it as optional value.
Can the next shop use the reward? Reserve money and a slot. Playing the blind is usually safer.
Can the run survive the skipped income? Compare future interest. Keep the guaranteed payout.
Does the tag improve the next Boss matchup? Give the route premium value. Do not pay extra for a cosmetic upgrade.
Is the reward still useful if the first option misses? The tag is resilient. Choose a blind or a more reliable tag.

Common mistakes and a 30-second checklist

Do not confuse a rare-looking reward with a guaranteed upgrade. Before skipping for Balatro tags, check the next Boss, next shop, money, Joker slots, consumable space, repeatable hand and the point at which a delayed tag pays. The goal is an explainable route, not the largest icon.

  • Name the gap: Chips, Mult, money or slots.
  • Check timing: Will it pay before the crisis?
  • Check capacity: Can the shop use it?
  • Compare the blind: Count interest and hand levels.
  • Keep a fallback: Know the safe hand.

Balatro Tags FAQ

Tags are rewards for skipping a Small Blind or Big Blind; they can add packs, Jokers, money, hand levels or route changes.

Take Balatro tags when their usable reward fixes a known problem and the run can survive the blind's lost income or shop value.

There is no universal best choice among Balatro tags; Buffoon, Voucher, Meteor, Boss and Double Tags are strong only when they match the current bottleneck.

It copies the next selected tag, so save it for a reward worth repeating.

Only with a free slot, enough time to use the Joker and a clear role for it.

The standard game has 24 tags. Some are unavailable in Ante 1, and several require the related Joker edition to have been discovered before their tag can appear.

Boss Tag rerolls the Boss Blind. Other tags usually change a shop, award money, add a hand-size effect or upgrade a poker hand. Read the exact tag text and compare it with the visible route before assigning it extra value.

A calculator can compare score, hand legality, odds and future resources after you enter the real run state. It cannot choose the tag by itself, so include the skipped blind's income, the next shop and the Boss rule in your decision.
